The Waikato has a lot of homes with character worth keeping: homesteads with good bones, original timber, and rooms that were built for how people lived when the house went up. Updating a kitchen in a home like that is a balance. You want it to work the way you live now, without stripping out what makes the house what it is.

Most kitchen design starts with a product range and fits you to what is in stock. I work the other way, beginning with the home, its character, its light and its layout, then designing the kitchen to that. The aim is a kitchen that feels like it was always meant to be there, modern where it needs to be and restrained enough to sit with the rest of the house rather than shout over it.

Not every kitchen can, or should, be opened up. Sometimes a wall is load-bearing or part of what makes an older home work. Sometimes, once the structural work is priced, opening it up is simply not worth the cost. And often the wall is earning its keep, because a solid run of wall is where your cabinetry and pantry storage live, and losing it to an open plan can cost you more storage than the openness is worth. Keeping the wall can be the right call, and it does not mean the kitchen has to stay cramped.

This is where the design does the heavy lifting. Resolving how you move through the room, where everything lives, and how the storage is drawn out means a small, closed kitchen can work far better than its footprint suggests. Considered storage, pantries planned into the bench, and a layout built around how you actually cook can give an old kitchen the function of a much larger one, without touching a wall. It is one of the quieter reasons a designer earns their place: the room did not get bigger, but it works as though it did.

One of my Waikato kitchens sits in an original homestead near Morrinsville. The house has real character, including matai floors the owners wanted kept, so the brief was to update the kitchen without losing what makes the home what it is.

The kitchen is small, and the walls could not be opened out to the dining room, so the work was as much about function as finish. I resolved the storage first, drawing it into two on-bench pantries with strip lighting inside, so everything has a home and the bench stays clear. Then the character was layered in: white cabinetry with a slim, minimalist shaker profile in thermoform, a white benchtop to keep it calm, and copper brought through in a hammered butler's sink, tapware, and an integrated rangehood made for the kitchen. The matai flooring and window sills were refurbished in a high-gloss polyurethane, so the original timber reads fresh again. The result is a modern farmhouse kitchen that belongs to its homestead, and works far harder than its size suggests.

It is also why function comes first: a kitchen has to work under real use before it is finished.
