A considered coastal laundry in Pukehina.

This laundry sits in the same beachside home in Pukehina as the coastal kitchen, and it was designed with the same care. A laundry is often the room that gets what is left over. Here, the laundry design treats it as a proper working space in its own right: planned around how it is actually used, with storage worked out to the last drawer, and a finish that carries the calm, coastal feel of the rest of the home.

Designed around how it is used.

The function was resolved first. The washing machine and dryer are raised for comfortable, ergonomic use, so there is no bending to load and unload, with a Blum Movento pull-out shelf and lock-stay set in below them for folding or setting a basket down. Beneath that, drawers built from a ply carcass hold dirty linen, out of sight but breathing, all hidden behind matching drawer fronts. An ironing board pulls out from behind a drawer front, there when you need it and gone when you do not. Double-door overhead cabinetry above the appliances takes the bulk storage. Between the drawers and below the sink, a custom-made shelving unit was crafted around the plumbing, with a centre piece made to cover the drainage and waste so nothing is left exposed. It is a room where every part earns its place.

A finish to match the home.

The finish carries the coastal palette through from the kitchen. The cabinetry is white acrylic in meringue matte finish paired with timber-look accents, warm against the pale, and the benchtop is Dekton, a textured porcelain in a sandy beige that echoes the kitchen and wears well in a working room. Stainless-steel tapware and a sink from Mercer, keep the fittings clean and understated. The result is a laundry that feels considered and calm rather than utilitarian, and that belongs to the home it sits in.

The details.

The care is in the parts you do not immediately see: the lock-stay that holds the pull-out shelf steady, the ply carcass chosen so linen can breathe, the ironing board folded away behind a drawer front, and the centre piece crafted to hide the waste and drainage. Individually they are small. Together they are the difference between a laundry that looks tidy and one that genuinely works, every day, for years.

Handles that disappear, teal that carries.

The handles are an extrusion profile, powder-coated white to match the cabinetry, so they read as part of the door rather than as hardware. That keeps the coastal look minimal and calm, and it is what lets the one accent do its work: the teal, in a textured lacquered wall panelling, which brings colour and a tactile note into an otherwise pale, sandy palette. One detail recedes so the other can lead.

MATERIALS & FINISHES

The cabinetry is Laminex acrylic in Meringue, matte, with timber-look in Laminex Woodgrain Bisque. The benchtop and splashback are Dekton Albarium in a matte, textured finish, run as one continuous surface from bench to wall. The sink and minimalist gooseneck tapware are Mercer in stainless steel, and the handleware is an extrusion profile powder-coated white to recede into the cabinetry. Storage runs on Blum hardware: Tandembox and Merivobox drawer runners with Softmotion soft-close and a specialised lock-stay runner system. All on the home's existing concrete floor.

If you are planning a laundry that works as hard as it looks, or a whole home where every room is designed with the same care, that is the place to start. There is no pressure in it, just a conversation about how you live and what you are hoping to achieve.

Common Questions.

Do you design laundries as well as kitchens?

Yes. The laundry is part of the same working core of the home as the kitchen, and it deserves the same thinking. When a laundry is designed alongside or in the same language as the kitchen, the whole home reads as one considered space rather than a good kitchen and an afterthought down the hall. We design it around how the household actually uses it, so it works hard and still feels calm.

What makes a laundry work well?

Function first. A laundry that works is about the sequence of how you use it, sorting, washing, drying, folding and putting away, and giving each of those a place so the room does not become a dropping zone. Bench space to work on, storage that keeps everyday items to hand and clutter out of sight, and a layout that suits the door and plumbing positions all matter more than any single feature. Designed properly, even a compact laundry can take the pressure off the rest of the home.

How do you get enough storage into a small laundry?

By planning it to the millimetre. In a smaller footprint every zone earns its place, so we plan tall storage for the things you hide, bench-height storage for the things you use, and detail like a place for baskets, cleaning gear and the ironing board built in rather than left to lean in a corner. The result is a laundry that stores like a larger one and still keeps a clean, uncluttered line.

Do you design laundries in Pukehina and across the Bay of Plenty?

Yes. Design Suite designs kitchens and laundries throughout the Bay of Plenty and the wider Waikato, coming to the home to design from the actual space and the way the household lives.
